Smartboards Rule

Smart Technology

The current technology that has emerged in the last few years that shapes learning in third grade has been the Smartboard. Our school is themed Academy of Communications and Technology and it is an important component of this technology. It replaced the overhead projector and opened many opportunities to reach student learning styles by allowing for manipulation of objects.

It could be made better by getting rid of the shadows that impede movement of the objects on the screen. To make this technology even better and avoid the pitfall of the shadows, Smart should consider the projection from the back of the screen. The Promethean Boards allow for the light to come in from behind the screen; however, the features of the Smartboard outweigh the pitfall and I still like it better than the Promethean board.

  1. I am very envious of the fact that you have the use of SMART Technology! At a previous school that I worked at there was a SMART Board that could be checked out from the computer lab for use in the classrooms. At my current school we are without a SMART Board. We possess all the necessary components to use this piece of technology, projectors and laptops; the school has never used any of the monies that we receive for this type of purchase. What would you suggest as a selling point to convince the current and team and administrator to purchase SMART Board for our school?

  2. Deb,

I think that the Smart Boards will make a big difference to classrooms of the future. One of the kinds of literacies that has come up in my reading is gestural literacy. Being cognizant of the ways digital objects are manipulated will be needed for future work forces. Actually, Erika, you might promote that aspect of Smart Board technology to the administration in charge of buying equipment. Perhaps you might find a grant to support your use of one. Seeing one teacher use it would help create the desire for it, as Soloway and Rogers in our reading suggested.
